The Secret to Healthy Nails

One of the things I get complimented on a lot is my nails. It's always "ooh, I like your nails" whether I am wearing a neutral nail varnish or have gone all out wearing something brighter. I always respond with a "thank you" before following up with a "they're real, you know". That is when they are really impressed. And when I say 'they' I am referring to lots of people, from my friends to a waitress at a restaurant, a cashier in Primark, on one occasion even a drag queen responded by exclaiming that my nails were "#goalz"... on to a winner there, aren't I!

With all the excitement of finding out this new information, they proceed to ask me how. Just, how?! They wanted answers to all of their nail questions: How are they so long? How do you get them nice and strong? What is your diet? Can I get mine as healthy as yours? I have to say, it is very flattering that they want to get nails like mine, but they have never always been like this. You wouldn't think from the pictures of my nails on my previous blogposts  that I actually used to bite them!

It was when I was 15 that I wanted to get my nails done for my leavers ball for finishing school, my mam said no because I just bite them and that it wouldn't be worth the money. Little 15 year old me was heartbroken, looking back it was actually hilarious how much of a priority it was in my life (I miss being a child with limited responsibilities). So I made a bet with myself to stop biting them, and with multiple bottles of Stop And Grow nail polish later, I had nice nails!

But now I am 22, my nails now are in the best condition they have ever been. And because I am always asked what my secret is, I thought it would make a nice little blog post to share it with the world! So, here goes... My secret to healthy nails is milk. Yes, milk.
I swear by a glass of milk with my breakfast every morning, granted that I do like to drink milk and I have done for as long as I can remember, but I honestly believe that this is the answer to how I get strong nails. Same with my teeth really. I was always told as a child that milk is full of calcium which will help you have strong bones, teeth and nails. And here I am, no fillings and never broken a bone and lush nails! I don't think it is coincidental either. When I'm away from home and I don't drink milk I can see a difference in the strength of my nails and they soon end up snapping.

However, it is important to take care of them as well. I love my nail polish but I don't wear it all the time, it is important to take breaks from wearing it as it can become damaging. I take 'nail breaks' every month and can go from 24hrs to a week without nail polish, if I have any uni deadlines this is more likely to be longer and I will cut my nails really short just so I don't have to worry about them while I'm focused on other things. But they do grow back, and I swear that this is because of my daily glass of milk!

I do have other little tips and tricks to keep my nails nice and healthy which could be another blog post in itself, but this is what personally works for me and I love it!

Nars Sheer Glow Foundation and Radiant Creamy Concealer Review

When it comes to make up I always feel like the base is the one thing you need to get right to make the rest of your make up look good. That is why I always like to experiment with different primers, foundations, concealers and powders to find my ideal combinations for different occasions. After constantly seeing Nars Sheer Glow bombing around pretty much everywhere online, I decided to go into my local John Lewis (on more than one occasion) get colour matched. After toying between the samples of Deauville and Fiji for way too long, I decided to go back to John Lewis for one last time to get their opinion. After a problem in store, the girls on the counter decided to give me a full base makeover and, lets just say, I was very impressed and stuff went on my Christmas list.

My New Year Favourites

Happy New Year! 2017 was a year where I did some pretty awesome things; I graduated my MA with distinction, I was part of a team which raised £60k for charity, I got to do more travelling this year. However this year has also come with a lot of self-reflection and a lot of wake up calls. I am going into 2018 feeling lost in the world of work; with no more education to turn to and trying to find my place in society to earn a living. It's stressful and is tough, however, temporary as I am keeping positive and something will come my way! 2017 has been great for self-reflection and really focusing on myself, what I want and what I enjoy. Anyways, enough self-reflection for now! I wanted to kick start 2018 off by sharing with you some of my favourite things that are coming into the new year with me that I have been loving, will continue to use and recommend to you guys!

Mani of the Month: Primark PS Nudes Nail Polish Set

It's no secret that I love painting my own nails. It's a way for me to relax as well as being therapeutic for me. I am often complimented on my nails and asked where I get them done, only to see their shock and surprise at the fact that I do them myself and that they aren't fake! I honestly feel like my choices of nail polish reflect how people react- if I am wearing a polish which looks streaky and tacky people notice, however when my nails are done well, and with good quality polishes which are 'on trend' colours then that is when I get the most compliments. And at the moment that 'on trend' colour is anything nude. I love nude nails, and for me, I really struggle to find the perfect nude nail polish; or any kind of nude beauty products for that matter! So when I was having a scout around good old Primarni, I came across this little set of nude nail polishes. They look lovely, don't they...
