It is no lie that I love London, even though I rarely ever go I feel right at home there and I can navigate the Underground like the back of my hand. Which was very necessary for travelling with my Mam who was clueless! Anyways, over the Christmas/New Year period after a few drinks when my mam drunkenly said to my dad "Elisa has been working really hard, me and her need to go on a theatre weekend in London" I may have taken advantage of this... Next thing I know first class train tickets are booked, a hotel for the night and theatre tickets to see Wicked!
I think I will try and keep this post short and sweet as I do tend to ramble a lot... I met my mam at Newcastle train station bright and early so we could make use of the first class lounge before boarding the train. The train journey was nice and pleasant with all the food and drink we wanted on the way down to London. We navigated our way to The President Hotel near Russell Square, outside we stumbled across a man throwing up outside a near by bar and the hotel itself looked fairly run down- I just remember looking at my Mam like 'what the hell has Dad booked us into this time'. However we were pleasantly surprised. It was clean and it had everything we needed to stay for 1 evening and we did have a comfortable stay there overall.
We dropped our bags off and I decided to teach mam how to use the tube by making our way towards Piccadilly Circus to see Theatreland! We ended up walking up Old Bond Street where all the designer stores were and a high end car barely 5 metres from anywhere we were. Pretending to be rich, gingerly making our way towards the Fenwick's at the top of the street. This surprisingly took more time than we thought and before we could even think about buying anything or looking in the shops it was time to head back to the hotel and get ready for the theatre.
We ate in Brunswick Square which is very close to the hotel we were staying in and we tried the restaurant Giraffe for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. And then the main event- Wicked was wicked! (sorry I couldn't help it). But the girl who was playing Glinda was the understudy and I swear down you wouldn't have been able to tell! It also gave a totally different perspective on the Wizard of Oz story, which is just very hard to explain- I just recommend you go and see it because it was one of the best I have ever seen!
Day 2 consisted of a surprisingly good breakfast in the hotel before having a nosey around Covent Garden and Leicester Square before heading to Harrods to have a nosey there. After doing this and having quick spot of lunch from the Harrods food court we slowly made our way back to collect our cases and head to the train station for our return home.
So a short and sweet trip really, but it was good for me to get a break from Newcastle from a bit and to spend some quality time with my Mam. At the end of the day, we had a purpose for the trip which was to go and see Wicked and it did not let us down. I would attempt to do a full review on it like what I did for School of Rock but I know that I would run out of words to describe it very quickly because it was just that good!
