One of my favourite memories of my childhood was playing 'Narrator Number 3' in my middle school production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. So when I saw that the production was coming to Metro Radio Arena this Christmas, I couldn't say no to reliving my youth.
I pride myself on knowing the lyrics to most of the songs in this musical (yes, including all the colours of the coat in the correct order), however what I did forget was how morbid the story really is. The musical tells the story of Joseph being given a technicolor dreamcoat by his father Jacob, much to the distaste of his 11 brothers. His brothers then sell their brother to Ishlimites who is then sold at auction and begins a new life in Egypt as a servant to the Pharaoh, not to see his brothers for years to come.
The fast paced, energetic story is narrated by Trina Hill; a very charming soprano singer who glistened on the set in her sparkly jacket. She was a great casting choice for this vital role.
The role of Joseph was played by X Factor and Pop Star to Opera Star Winner Joe McElderry. Boy, has he come a long way since his X Factor days. I will always remember him on X Factor as a baby faced tenor singer doing his own spin on pop songs, however this musical was great to highlight is wide vocal range. Close Every Door To Me was the song which really showcased his talents and how his talents have developed from when he was a teenager. He did the role justice and impressed the crowd with a standing ovation.
The production was supported by a strong male ensemble as well as an adorable childrens choir. The set was very simple, made up of steps in a pyramid format (nice reference to Egypt there) with a thrust stage in the shape of a diamond. The set worked for this energetic performance, with minimal set but elaborate costumes to tell the story, it was very impressive.
One of my favourite things about this show was the ending where Joe broke out of character to get the audience up on their feet dancing to Any Dream Will Do like it was one of his own gigs. I highly recommend people to come and see this performance while it is still showing, I am sure you won't be disappointed.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is showing at Metro Radio Arena until 31st December 2017.
