Top 5 'Everyday' Affordable Lipsticks

One of my favourite things to do when I have a lazy day doing the odd jobs where I don't feel like wearing too much makeup is to have a very simple routine. Concealer, powder, bronzer, brows, mascara and lippy. That's all I need. I have my staple make up items, however the one thing that I do like to change up and have variety to is my lip colour. Although I want to wear a minimal look, the lip colour changes on my mood, what I am wearing that day, how much moisture my lips need etc. I have chosen 5 of my favourite affordable lipsticks (which I prefer over the liquid lipstick hype as it is less maitancence and looks more natural than a full-on matte lip), which I think are perfect for just throwing on for a minimal makeup look.

(L-R: Kiko Smart Lipstick in 405, Essence Matt Matt Matt in 02, Maybelline Colour Sensational in 630 Velvet Beige, Topshop Lipstick in Mink and Rimmel Lasting Finish in 077 Asia)
Ok, so if you look at my swatches, you would think that a lot of these lipsticks look the same... BUT THEY'RE NOT! (The amount of times I have had to explain this to my other half, I swear to God) Each different lipstick has different undertones, different finishes, different levels of opacity, all of which I will explain in each review.

First up, one of my favourites that I have discovered this year is from Kiko, it is one of their Smart Lipsticks in the shade 405. There are many things I love about this lipstick; first of all, this range is dirt cheap! I think it was only like £3.90 for one which is an absolute steal. This lipstick is perfect for those who are on the go, wear minimal makeup and just want a sheer wash of colour on the lips. They are quite sheer, so I don't think they will be to everyone's taste but I just love throwing this on when I don't know what I want to wear or I am in a rush. Not necessarily a fan of the 2 texture packaging, a matte lid and a shiny tube and bullet, however because this is such a great every day staple and is perfect handbag size I can look past this. I also like to go for this one when I have really dry lips; if I am having a day where everything else on my lips looks crusty and enhances every dry spot, I opt for this one because they are super moisturising. You do have to reapply throughout the day but I am ok with this. Their shade range is also very impressive to.
Secondly, I have fallen in love with Essence's Matt Matt Matt lipstick in the shade 02. This brand is so overlooked, I think this is because it isn't as available in Boots or Superdrug in the UK but I like to get Essence products from Wilko. This is another lipstick that won't break the bank at £2.30 which is the cheapest of the 5 I have chosen, but the quality of this is SO GOOD! It has a light, creamy texture which is comparable to MAC's matte lipstick formula and their lasting power is comparable as well. For something that is cheap as chips, this is a lipstick that I recommend everybody try- you will be pleasantly surprised. 02 is the shade which is closest to my natural lip colour; although the rest of the range is small, they focus on natural and more wearable colours so there should be something for everyone. I think the packaging is sleek and looks more than what it is worth. I love pairing this with a full face of every day makeup, you know those days where you want to make more effort to look nice but not full on glam? Yeah, that...

I have spoken about this one before in last year's beauty favourites and it still is a staple lipstick that I love to just throw in my handbag. I feel like everybody owns at least one of the Maybelline Colour Sensational lipsticks, I think that it is their creamy texture and strong colour pigmentation is what makes this lipstick such a cult high street classic. I personally love the formula of these lipsticks, they are so versatile to the point where you can wear them on the daily with no makeup to wearing them on a big night out, and I think the bold and strong shade range definitely contributes to the wearability. One of the things I found hardest was trying to find my 'perfect every day shade'- I have quite pigmented lips and I don't opt for pinks, so the closest to my lip colour is 630 Velvet Beige which definitely gets it's wear- I'm nearly due for a new one! You can see from the packaging, it is very well loved, it is sleek and great for throwing in your bag. And if you lose it, for £6.99 it is easily replaceable.
The next lipstick is probably the most expensive of the 5 that I have chosen, however I personally think that Top Shop lipsticks (and their makeup line in general) is so overlooked. Their Topshop Lips products are ones which are creamy, long lasting and comfortable on the lips. They have been popular enough to have their range extended producing a Nude line and a Metallic range. The lipstick I have chosen is not in either of them ranges but it would pass of as a good nude for some depending on skin tones. At £8.00, Mink certainly has a cooler and a greyer undertone compared to the other lipsticks I have chosen; however I do like to throw this particular lipstick on if I want a more grungy look. If I wore this with my bare minimum makeup days it would wash me out, however with a full face of makeup where I make an extra effort, it is a good go-to. I also can't find this one on Topshop's website so I pray that they haven't discontinued it or I will be gutted... Best bet is to check in stores!
And last, but not least; I couldn't not include a Rimmel lippy. Another range of lipsticks which I think gets overlooked a lot, Rimmel's Lasting Finish lipsticks are some of my favourites, and I am sure my first ever lipstick that I bought came from this line (066 Heather Shimmer- yep!) At £4.99, a good highstreet price, 077 Asia is a beautiful pinky nude with beige undertones which will suit a lot of skin tones. The difference between this one compared to others I have picked out is that this has a slightly frosty finish, but it is comfortable and creamy on the lips. The lasting power of these is great to, and they don't bleed. This is one of those that I like to pair with any look where I think I have messed my eye makeup look or look very tired; the frost like sheen takes the emphasis away from what I messed up. The packaging is sleek and this range has been out for years, so is loved by many generations, even my mam was surprised about them still being made! Love this one, and other colours in the range are great too!

Nars Sheer Glow Foundation and Radiant Creamy Concealer Review

When it comes to make up I always feel like the base is the one thing you need to get right to make the rest of your make up look good. That is why I always like to experiment with different primers, foundations, concealers and powders to find my ideal combinations for different occasions. After constantly seeing Nars Sheer Glow bombing around pretty much everywhere online, I decided to go into my local John Lewis (on more than one occasion) get colour matched. After toying between the samples of Deauville and Fiji for way too long, I decided to go back to John Lewis for one last time to get their opinion. After a problem in store, the girls on the counter decided to give me a full base makeover and, lets just say, I was very impressed and stuff went on my Christmas list.

My New Year Favourites

Happy New Year! 2017 was a year where I did some pretty awesome things; I graduated my MA with distinction, I was part of a team which raised £60k for charity, I got to do more travelling this year. However this year has also come with a lot of self-reflection and a lot of wake up calls. I am going into 2018 feeling lost in the world of work; with no more education to turn to and trying to find my place in society to earn a living. It's stressful and is tough, however, temporary as I am keeping positive and something will come my way! 2017 has been great for self-reflection and really focusing on myself, what I want and what I enjoy. Anyways, enough self-reflection for now! I wanted to kick start 2018 off by sharing with you some of my favourite things that are coming into the new year with me that I have been loving, will continue to use and recommend to you guys!

Mani of the Month: Primark PS Nudes Nail Polish Set

It's no secret that I love painting my own nails. It's a way for me to relax as well as being therapeutic for me. I am often complimented on my nails and asked where I get them done, only to see their shock and surprise at the fact that I do them myself and that they aren't fake! I honestly feel like my choices of nail polish reflect how people react- if I am wearing a polish which looks streaky and tacky people notice, however when my nails are done well, and with good quality polishes which are 'on trend' colours then that is when I get the most compliments. And at the moment that 'on trend' colour is anything nude. I love nude nails, and for me, I really struggle to find the perfect nude nail polish; or any kind of nude beauty products for that matter! So when I was having a scout around good old Primarni, I came across this little set of nude nail polishes. They look lovely, don't they...
